Jayshree Nariansamy’s unwavering commitment to empowering others and her vision of a brighter, more equitable South Africa make her a beacon of hope and inspiration for all, she is a recipient of the 2023 Mail & Guardian Power of Women award for making a profound impact on her community and beyond.

Jayshree, aged 56, is the founder and a coach at “Love and Hope Rising,” a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that stands as a beacon of hope and empowerment in the southern region of Johannesburg.

Her journey is one marked by resilience and determination. Raised on a farm in Cato Manor, KwaZulu-Natal, she experienced a pivotal moment at the tender age of nine when her family was forced to relocate to Chatsworth due to the implementation of the Group Areas Act. This early exposure to adversity and displacement sowed the seeds of compassion and empathy within her.

Deeply religious and a firm believer in trusting her maker above all else, Jayshree’s greatest joy lies in imparting knowledge and empowerment to others. She is a trained life coach and skills trainer, having honed her expertise at the Academy of York. Her membership in “Coaches and Mentors of South Africa” has further enabled her to advocate for human rights in a nation where such rights are sometimes overlooked.

As a single mother who escaped a home plagued by physical and mental abuse, Jayshree has weathered numerous trials that could have easily broken her spirit. Yet, she stands today as a life coach and pastor, offering hope not only to her community of Lenasia South but also to those incarcerated, whose voices have often been silenced.

With selfless dedication, Jayshree uses her own resources, along with the support of small donations and sponsors, to provide meals and assemble grocery hampers for those in need. Her tireless efforts in assisting abused women and children are especially significant in a country grappling with alarmingly high rates of gender-based violence.

Jayshree’s impact has extended far beyond the boundaries of her community, touching and transforming the lives of countless individuals who have had the privilege of crossing her path.

When asked about the best piece of advice she’s ever received, Jayshree emphasizes the importance of honouring one’s word, practicing discipline, and leading a life of righteousness. She also underscores the significance of self-sufficiency, encouraging others not to rely solely on a male partner for support.

As the world celebrates the theme “Accelerating Equality & Empowerment in Women” this year, Jayshree’s approach to empowerment is deeply personal. She draws strength from her own life experiences, from overcoming adversity and abuse to discovering her self-worth and values. Armed with these tools and guided by her faith, she empowers other marginalized women and men, infusing hope into their lives.

Jayshree’s commitment to self-improvement is evident in her continuous pursuit of knowledge. She avidly reads self-development books, watches educational videos, listens to CDs, participates in studies and programs, and maintains connections with mentors who inspire her growth.

When asked about her vision for South Africa, Jayshree articulates a desire to see a female president at the helm of the nation. She believes that women possess the innate qualities of nurturers, wise decision-makers, and capable leaders, well-suited to guiding South Africa’s future. In addition, she hopes to educate young adult males and mature men about their roles as leaders both at home and in society.

Her life’s work exemplifies the transformative power of resilience, compassion, and unwavering faith.
