About 80 women gathered at Don Mateman Hall in Eldorado Park on Wednesday, August 19, for a Women’s Day programme that placed gender-based violence, women’s solidarity and community support in the spotlight.
The gathering, hosted by the City of Johannesburg’s Group Citizen Relationship and Urban Management Department (CRUM) Region G, brought together community leaders and representatives from NGOs, NPOs, businesses and government.
One of the strongest messages of the day came from Audrey Caster of Women in NPO and NGO, who shared her experience of surviving abuse.
Caster told attendees that she had experienced physical abuse in her first marriage and verbal abuse in her second. She also disclosed that she was sexually abused by her stepfather between the ages of six and 12.
She said her faith helped her find the strength to eventually leave her second marriage.
Her testimony highlighted the importance of creating spaces where survivors can speak openly about abuse and seek support without shame or judgement.
CRUM Deputy Director Hilda Mkhwananzi also addressed the gathering, calling on women across generations to support one another and work collectively towards stronger communities.
The programme placed emphasis on intergenerational learning, with younger and older women encouraged to exchange knowledge and experiences.
Women attending the event were also given information on where to seek help if they were experiencing abuse or found themselves in danger.
A crisis line, 0800 223 217, was shared with attendees as a support resource.
The gathering concluded with gifts presented to speakers and participants in recognition of their contribution to their communities.
