A trip to the zoo promises to be a day of discovery and excitement for 30 children from Happy Feet Daycare in Ennerdale, but the centre is turning to the community for help to make it happen.
The daycare is appealing to businesses, organisations and residents for sponsorships and donations ahead of the planned visit to the Joburg Zoo on September 21.
For many of the children, the cost of such an outing is beyond what their families can afford. The centre says several parents are unemployed and rely on SASSA grants to meet their households’ everyday needs.
Muneerah Williams, principal of Happy Feet Daycare, told Globe Post that financial circumstances should not stand in the way of the children enjoying an educational experience outside the classroom.
“We are seeking support and assistance because many of the parents are unemployed and rely on SASSA grants. They cannot afford to pay for the trip,” Williams said.
The centre hopes to give the children an opportunity to explore the zoo, learn about animals and enjoy a memorable day away from their usual surroundings.
Donations will go towards transport to and from the zoo, entrance fees, meals, drinks, snacks and treats for the 30 children.
Happy Feet Daycare believes even a small contribution could go a long way towards giving the youngsters an experience they may not otherwise have.
