The Vocal Arts Festival embarks on a Two-City Tour in South Africa in February 2024, a concept originating from the UK-based dawah-oriented events company, Twenty6. Dawah, an Arabic term meaning to summon or invite, in this context invites people to reconnect with God through art, specifically religious music or nasheeds.
A nasheed, a vocal music genre popular throughout the Islamic world, takes centre stage. South Africa proudly becomes the first country, aside from the UK, to host The Vocal Arts Festival. While the featured artists have individually sold out concerts worldwide, this collective endeavour marks a unique achievement. Such events, transcending religious boundaries, contribute significantly to community upliftment and embody the concept that a united country cannot fall.
The lineup of esteemed artists includes:
- Safe Adam (from the UK): Also known as Saif Adam, an Iraqi British singer/songwriter, his nasheed journey began around 2012, evolving into vocals-only tracks.
- Siedd (from Canada): A Pakistan-born Canadian singer/songwriter, Siedd gained popularity with his viral 2016 cover of James Arthur’s “Keep Us Close.”
- Ilyas Mao (from Canada): Born in Somalia, Ilyas Mao is a Canadian singer, songwriter, composer, and producer. Influenced by hip hop, he uses nasheeds to positively impact young minds.
- Muslim Belal (from the UK): Also known as Ashley Chin, Muslim Belal reverted to Islam at 19. With a diverse background in music, films, youth work, charity, and poetry, he brings a unique perspective to the festival.
- Ramzan Days: Of Nigerian origin, Ramzan Days is renowned for his cover versions of popular pop songs worldwide.
Nasheed lyrics typically reference spiritual beliefs, history, religion, and current events.
