The Johannesburg Health District, in partnership with esteemed medical institutions, Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital (CMJAH), Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital (CHBAH), and Pink Drive, joined hands to host a Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign on Tuesday, 31 October at the Lenasia SOuth District Hospital.
The campaign proved to be a resounding success with numerous impactful activities and presentations aimed at raising awareness about breast cancer and empowering individuals with knowledge and resources.
One of the highlights of the event was the enlightening address by guest speaker Brightwell Monnye who provided valuable insights into the crucial role of Radiography in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. His expertise shed light on the importance of early detection and access to advanced medical imaging technologies.
Nozipho Khumalo, another distinguished speaker, captivated the audience as she presented the significance of Mammography and the breast self-examination method as vital tools for detecting lumps and changes in breast tissue. Her presentation emphasized the critical role that regular screenings and self-awareness play in the fight against breast cancer.
In a heartfelt moment, breast cancer survivor Doreen shared her inspiring journey, offering hope and strength to those directly and indirectly affected by cancer. Her story served as a poignant reminder of the resilience and courage of survivors.
Furthermore, the campaign included an essential component of medical screenings. A total of 25 patients underwent Mammography, ensuring early detection and timely intervention for those in need.
The event also presented an opportunity to express gratitude and appreciation to those who have dedicated their lives to healthcare. Zarina Livingstone, the founder of Caretakers Of The Needy, took a moment to honour Matron Zodwa Magwaza and Sister Alice Rangoato from the Lenasia South District Hospital with appreciation certificates for their unwavering commitment to patient care and their contribution to the fight against breast cancer.
In a closing statement, Dr Maleka extended heartfelt thanks to all attendees, expressing, “special thanks to all sponsors and guest patients that attended.” This collective effort and support are vital in the ongoing fight against breast cancer, and it is through the unity of communities and healthcare professionals that strides are made towards a healthier, cancer-aware society.
