Johannesburg’s digital future is being reinforced through an extensive fibre network rehabilitation programme aimed at improving connectivity, strengthening municipal services and preparing the city for future technological growth.
The Metropolitan Tech Company (MTC) is rolling out its Core Network Rehabilitation Programme to restore and upgrade critical sections of Johannesburg’s fibre infrastructure, which serves as the backbone of many of the City’s digital services.
Although largely invisible to residents, the fibre network supports municipal buildings, public Wi-Fi, digital communication systems and a range of smart city services that rely on fast and reliable connectivity. As the demand for digital services continues to increase, maintaining and modernising this infrastructure has become a key priority.
Rehabilitation work is currently taking place at several strategic locations across Johannesburg, including Randburg, Hunters Hill, Sandton, Alexandra, Martindale, Roodepoort, Eldorado Park and Lenasia, with multiple projects progressing simultaneously.
Before construction begins, MTC works closely with various municipal departments and stakeholders to obtain wayleave approvals, identify existing underground infrastructure and confirm trench routes. This collaborative planning helps protect existing services, reduces disruptions to communities and ensures the work is carried out safely and efficiently.
As each section of the upgraded network is completed and brought online, it strengthens the City’s digital infrastructure, improving communication across municipal facilities and supporting the reliable delivery of essential digital services to residents.
MTC Network Technician Nsizwa Kubeka said investing in the City’s core network is essential to ensuring Johannesburg remains digitally connected.
“Much of Johannesburg’s digital infrastructure operates behind the scenes, but it plays a vital role in supporting the City’s daily operations. Core network rehabilitation strengthens the fibre network that enables essential municipal services, improves network resilience and helps ensure residents continue to benefit from reliable connectivity now and into the future,” said Kubeka.
The Core Network Rehabilitation Programme forms part of MTC’s broader commitment to building a smarter, more connected Johannesburg. By strengthening the City’s digital backbone, the initiative aims to enhance municipal service delivery, improve network resilience and ensure the infrastructure is ready to meet the growing digital demands of the future.
