An Uber driver’s decision to alert police about suspicious behaviour during a trip to Limpopo led to the arrest of two men and the recovery of suspected explosives.
The two men, aged 49 and 29, were travelling from Johannesburg towards Ndzelele in Makhado when the driver raised the alarm.The incident happened in the early hours of Monday, 5 October, near a filling station along the N1 North in Botlokwa. Officers from the Botlokwa Prevention Unit responded to the suspected hijacking alert and searched the two passengers.
Police allege that the search uncovered six water-gel explosives, three red-and-white insulated detonator cables and two pairs of gloves.The 49-year-old suspect is from Lenasia, while the 29-year-old is from Ennerdale. Police said both men are originally from the North West. The pair were arrested for alleged possession of explosives and are expected to appear before the Morebeng Magistrate’s Court.
The circumstances surrounding the suspected explosives and their intended use remain subject to the ongoing investigation.
