The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued Level 1 and Level 2 severe thunderstorm warnings for parts of Johannesburg South, with residents in Lenasia South, Ennerdale, Lawley and surrounding areas urged to remain on high alert. The storm system is expected to bring heavy rainfall, strong winds, hail and an increased risk of localised flooding.
In a statement, SAWS warned: “Residents in the affected areas should prepare for heavy rainfall, localised flooding, strong winds and possible hail. Poor driving conditions and reduced visibility are likely to occur during peak traffic hours.” The alert follows several days of persistent downpours and recurring thunderstorms, which have already left parts of Gauteng waterlogged.
Government Communications has echoed the call for vigilance. “Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from official sources, seek shelter when thunderstorms approach, avoid flooded roads, and report fallen trees or flooding to municipal authorities,” the advisory noted.
Motorists have been urged to avoid low-lying bridges and waterlogged routes, and to move vehicles under cover where possible. Emergency response teams are on standby as the severe weather may disrupt traffic flow and damage infrastructure.
Residents across all affected areas are advised to stay indoors where possible and continue monitoring updates from @GovernmentZA and the South African Weather Service.
