Naftal Khoza, a Grade 9 learner at Ennerdale Secondary School, recently participated in the 45th Eskom Expo International Science Fair and won a bronze medal. The Gauteng South and South Africa edition of the fair was held at the Emperor’s Palace Convention Centre from 6–10 October 2025.

Naftal told GLOBE POST: “At the ISF, I showcased my research and was awarded a bronze medal. Although I didn’t win gold at the international level, I was proud to represent my country and showcase my innovative spirit.”

“As a young scientist from Lawley, I have had the privilege of participating in the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, a platform that has nurtured my passion for innovation and problem-solving. My journey began in 2022 when I identified a pressing issue in South Africa – load shedding. I developed an innovative solution that generated energy from the soil, similar to an earth battery, but with added components that made it more compact and versatile for use in emergencies, evacuations, and outdoor activities like camping.”

His 2022 project earned him a bronze medal at the Eskom Expo Regional Science Fair, which led to his selection for the International Science Fair, where he received a silver medal. Although he didn’t win gold in those early years, the experience was invaluable.

In 2023 and 2024, he faced setbacks at the regional science fairs and didn’t qualify for the ISF, but he remained determined. In late 2024, Naftal was invited to the Research and Innovation Day camp, which reignited his passion for scientific inquiry. He shifted his focus to environmental science and, in 2025, participated in the regional science fair with a new project exploring the phytoremediation potential of alien invasive plants.

His research investigated how these plants can absorb and remove pollutants from contaminated soil, offering a potential solution for environmental remediation. This project earned him a gold medal at the regional science fair, paving the way for his participation at the ISF.

Reflecting on his journey, Naftal added: “My experiences have taught me that hard work, perseverance, and a willingness to adapt and learn are essential to achieving success.”
