35th Annual Gandhi Walk returns with a carnival twist this Sunday
Get ready to put on your most vibrant and festive carnival outfits as the 35th Annual Gandhi Walk makes its grand return on Sunday, 17 September. Organised by the Gandhi Walk Committee (GWC), this year’s event promises to be a colorful, fun, and vibrant celebration of community unity.
The Gandhi Walk, a beloved tradition in Lenasia, was harshly postponed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, it’s back with a unified 6km fun family walk that kicks off at 9:30 AM, featuring a carnival-themed day that’s set to bring the streets of Lenasia to life.
Participants are encouraged to gather family, friends, work buddies, and classmates to form walking groups, all dressed in carnival-style outfits. The goal is to create a Carnival vibe like never before seen in Lenasia.
The festivities will start as early as 8 AM at Gandhi Hall in Ext 5, which has been the official start and finish point of the annual Gandhi Walk for the past 35 years. Attendees can look forward to activities such as Yoga, Zumba, free morning coffee, and a host of other exciting attractions.
Dignitaries, models, pageant title holders, and glitterati from around Gauteng will grace the event, adding sparkle and glamor to the day. Walkers will receive medals, caps or T-shirts, and a goodie bag. Additionally, there will be a surprise mini raffle draw during the event.
Entertainment will be in abundance, featuring vocalists Ridwaan Dawood and Bushan Dass, as well as captivating dance performances by Kulture Dance, Maza Academy of Dance, and Desi Motion. The Yash Entertainment Show Band is set to wow the crowd, with entertainment maestro Shaky Russell serving as the event’s MC and grand ambassador.
Participation in the Gandhi Walk is accessible to all, with a Walker Number available for just R50. Numbers can be purchased throughout the weekend and on the morning of the Gandhi Walk itself.
Safety will be a top priority, with official security provided by Lethal Forces, and Lenmed and Pulsate Ambulance Services offering medical support for the day. Shiraz Auto will be the motor display partner, while JYM and TVKAV will handle all stage, sound, and lighting needs, with décor courtesy of Events by Chetna.
The Gandhi Walk has been a symbol of unity and community spirit for over three decades, and this year’s carnival-themed celebration promises to be a memorable and joyous occasion for all.
