215 motorists have been arrested by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers for driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol between Monday, 6 April, and Sunday, 12 April 2026, this following an intensified law enforcement operations across the city. In a statement, JMPD confirmed that it remains committed to ensuring the safety of all road users within the City of Johannesburg.

According to the statement , these arrests resulted from strategic roadblocks, roving checkpoints, and increased visibility of our dedicated officers throughout the week.

JMPD Chief of Police Commissioner Patrick Jaca, said: “Driving under the influence remains one of the leading causes of fatal road accidents in our city. The arrest of 215 individuals in just seven days clearly shows that some motorists continue to ignore the law and the lives of others. We want to be very clear: if you drink and drive, you will be caught, and you will face the full force of the law.”

High-density operations targeted the Inner City, Sandton, Soweto, Midrand corridors, and other key areas within the city. JMPD has urged that all residents and visitors to prioritise safety. Driving while intoxicated significantly impairs reaction times and judgment, turning a vehicle into a lethal weapon.

“Our message to the public is simple. If you plan to consume alcohol, arrange for a designated driver or use e-hailing services,” stated JMPD statement.

JMPD highlighted that they maintains a zero-tolerance stance on drunk driving and reckless behaviour on our roads. “We will continue to increase our presence and conduct rigorous enforcement operations to ensure our roads remain safe for everyone,” concluded the statement.
