Gauteng residents warned to stay safe as cold and wet weather persists

Gauteng residents have been urged to take extra precautions as cold and wet weather continues across the province, with temperatures expected to fall to around 3°C to 4°C in some areas.

The Gauteng Provincial Government warned on Tuesday, 11 August 2026, that rain, low temperatures and wet roads could increase risks for motorists, pedestrians and vulnerable households.

Of particular concern are households using alternative methods to stay warm during the cold spell.

The provincial government warned residents against illegal electricity connections, electricity theft and tampering with electrical infrastructure, saying these practices could cause electrocution, serious injury or death.

“We urge residents never to tamper with electricity infrastructure or connect homes to the electricity network illegally,” the provincial government said.

Parents and guardians were also encouraged to keep children away from substations, exposed electrical cables, damaged infrastructure and other electrical installations.

Residents using heaters, stoves, candles, paraffin appliances, braziers or open fires have been asked to exercise caution.

Heating and cooking equipment should not be left unattended, particularly while people are sleeping, and should be kept away from bedding, curtains, clothing and other flammable material.

The government also warned that unsafe heating methods could result in carbon monoxide poisoning or house fires.

“No effort to keep warm should put a life at risk,” the provincial government said.

Motorists have been advised to reduce their speed on wet roads, maintain a safe following distance and use headlights when visibility is poor.

Drivers should also avoid attempting to cross flooded roads or bridges, while pedestrians have been warned not to walk through flooded areas or fast-flowing water.

The provincial government said disaster management and emergency response structures were continuing to monitor conditions and coordinate with municipalities and other stakeholders.

Residents were also encouraged to monitor official weather and emergency alerts and check on elderly people, children and other vulnerable members of their communities.
