Residents in Ennerdale have raised concerns over neglected roads, illegal dumping, overgrown areas and other service-delivery issues, prompting the ACDP Blueheart Operation to conduct a clean-up and oversight inspection in the area.
The initiative was led by ACDP councillor candidate for Ward 7, Pastor Melvyn Petersen, together with Ward 8 councillor candidate Priscilla Colledge and members of Women on Destiny. The team visited Wellington Street, Extension 1, to assess conditions on the ground, clean affected areas and identify problems that require attention from the relevant municipal departments.
Operating under the banner “Visibility | War on Road Maintenance”, the campaign was prompted by concerns raised by residents about the condition of roads and public spaces. Petersen said the initiative was about responding to those concerns through practical action while ensuring that leadership remains visible within the community.
“The campaign was inspired by the need to take visible, practical action in our communities. Residents complained and asked, and we executed on our mandate. Residents deserve clean, safe and well-maintained roads and public spaces,” Petersen said.
During the inspection, the team identified litter, illegal dumping, potholes, streetlight concerns, overgrown areas and neglected road verges. Blocked drains, overflowing sewage and accumulated waste were also among the issues highlighted during the operation. The ACDP said these problems require attention from the relevant authorities, particularly where they affect the safety, cleanliness and general living conditions of residents.
The team said the inspection was also intended to strengthen oversight by identifying problems that can be reported to the appropriate municipal entities. Issues relating to roads, waste removal, electricity and other services will be directed to departments and entities such as the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), Pikitup and City Power, depending on the nature of each complaint.
Petersen said the operation would not end with the clean-up, with the team planning to continue conducting visibility campaigns and inspections while engaging residents about problems in their areas. The approach includes identifying concerns, reporting them, monitoring whether action is taken and keeping residents informed about developments.
The ACDP stressed that community-led clean-up initiatives are not intended to replace municipal responsibilities. While residents can contribute by keeping their surroundings clean and reporting problems, municipal authorities remain responsible for maintaining infrastructure and delivering services. The Blueheart Operation is therefore also aimed at ensuring that identified problems receive the necessary attention and follow-up.
The initiative further seeks to encourage residents to take an active role in their communities by reporting neglected areas and participating in efforts to improve their surroundings. The ACDP said cooperation between residents, community organisations and municipal authorities is necessary to address ongoing service-delivery challenges effectively.
“We will continue with regular visibility campaigns, clean-up drives, oversight inspections and engagement with residents and relevant City departments. Our approach is to identify problems, report them, monitor progress and keep residents informed,” Petersen said.
The ACDP said the Blueheart Operation will continue focusing on areas where residents have raised concerns, with future activities expected to include further inspections, community engagement and follow-ups on outstanding service-delivery issues. The campaign forms part of the party’s efforts to maintain a visible presence in communities while highlighting concerns that require municipal intervention.
