The Department of Petroleum and Mineral Resources has published the official fuel price adjustments that will come into effect on Wednesday, 3 June, bringing mixed relief and pressure for South African motorists at the start of the new month.

Motorists using petrol will see an increase of R1.43 per litre across both grades. This comes after a partial recovery of international oil price movements and exchange rate fluctuations, which outweighed earlier expectations of a possible decrease. In contrast, diesel users will see substantial relief at the pumps, with between R2.62 and R3.25 per litre.

According to the departments latest projections, the expected adjustments are as follows:

  • Petrol 93: increase of R1.43 per litre
  • Petrol 95: increase of R1.43 per litre
  • Diesel 0.05% (wholesale): decrease of R3.25 per litre
  • Diesel 0.005% (wholesale): decrease of R2.62 per litre

While the diesel price cuts will provide welcome relief to the freight, logistics and agricultural sectors, the sharp increase in petrol prices is expected to place further pressure on household budgets already strained by rising living costs, higher interest rates and ongoing inflationary pressures.
