The Gauteng Traffic Police (GTP) warn motorists to ensure compliance with safety regulations on the road and avoid overloading vehicles as traffic volumes are expected to increase ahead of the Easter festive period.
Motorists are urged to ensure that all loads are properly secured and within legal limits in accordance with the National Road Traffic Act, 93 of 1996.
Over speeding, unsafe overtaking, reckless and negligent driving and overloaded vehicles, including trailers and public transport carrying many passengers, are the major contributing factors to road crashes during this period.
Overloading compromises vehicle stability, increases braking distance, increases the risk of tyre bursts, and significantly raises the likelihood of serious and fatal accidents.
It is important for motorists to ensure that vehicles do not carry loads exceeding the prescribed height, width, or projection restrictions. In addition, passengers must only be transported within the approved capacity of the vehicle, and children must be seated in accordance with relevant safety regulations.
The Gauteng Traffic Police, working with other law enforcement agencies, will intensify operations across the province, particularly in high traffic routes including:
- N1 Pretoria to Polokwane
- N4 Pretoria to Emalahleni
- N4 Pretoria to Rustenburg
- N12 Johannesburg to Potchefstroom
- N3 Johannesburg to Durban
- N1 Johannesburg to Bloemfontein
- N12 Johannesburg to Emalahleni
- R59 Alberton to Sasolburg
These operations will focus on overloaded vehicles and other high-risk violations, particularly along major routes and identified crime hotspot areas. Non-compliant motorists and operators will face fines, and vehicles may be impounded where necessary.
Road users are encouraged to prioritise safety by observing the following:
- Always remain alert
- Practice defensive driving and avoid speeding or risky overtaking
- Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Ensure all passengers are correctly seated and wearing seatbelts
- Delay travelling during poor weather conditions where possible
- Obey all road signs and traffic signals
- Refrain from overloading passengers or goods, as it is illegal and dangerous
