Traffic congestion is expected to intensify along the R71 route in Limpopo as millions of Zion Christian Church (ZCC) and St Engenas ZCC members make their way to Moria, Polokwane for annual Easter pilgrimages.

The ZCC annual pilgrimage to Moria is a massive Easter gathering of over 3 million Zion Christian Church (ZCC) members in Limpopo, South Africa, serving as a spiritual homecoming for prayer, healing, and unity. It is one of Africa’s largest religious events, where followers reconnect with their faith, receive messages from Reverend Bishop Dr. Barnabas Edward Lekganyane, and honour their African indigenous church identity.

Deputy Minister of Transport, Mkhuleko Hlengwa, visited the ZCC headquarters in Moria, Mankweng on Tuesday, 31 March , as part of a government oversight initiative ahead of the busy travel period. His visit to Mankweng comes amid preparations for a significant influx of pilgrims expected over the Easter weekend.

Authorities have identified key routes, including the R71 from Polokwane to Tzaneen, N1 from Maubane to Beitbridge, R37 from Polokwane to Burgersfort, the R40 and R36, as high-traffic zones likely to experience severe delays. Officials are closely monitoring traffic flow and implementing safety measures to manage congestion and reduce the risk of accidents.

The visit forms part of the government’s intensified 2026 Easter Road Safety Campaign, aimed at ensuring safer travel during one of the busiest periods on South Africa’s roads.

Limpopo Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has reassured both residents and visitors that the South African Police Service (SAPS) is fully prepared for the increased activity. She confirmed that comprehensive operational plans have been activated, including high-visibility patrols, roadblocks, and stop-and-search operations across major routes.

Meanwhile, JMPD Chief of police, Patric Jaca, said the department is adopting a zero tolerence approach to traffic violations. Majors include high visibility enforcements focusing on police visibility, alcohol abuse and crime prevention.
