Police have launched a full investigation following a shooting incident at the Booysens Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday morning, 20 January, which left two people dead and three others injured.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the shooting occurred at approximately 10:30 at the main entrance of the court.

Five people were shot during the incident. Two victims were declared dead at the scene, while three others sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital for medical treatment.

SAPS confirmed that the Provincial Commissioner of the police in Gauteng, Tommy Mthombeni, has mobilised additional resources to manage the active crime scene and support the investigation.

Police said the group that was targeted had been at court in support of an accused who was appearing in connection with a murder and attempted murder case stemming from an incident that occurred in Mondeor in April 2025.

One of the injured victims has been identified as the legal representative of the accused.

Preliminary investigations indicate that three unknown men, reportedly wearing caps, approached the group as they were leaving the court and opened fire before fleeing the scene. The suspects are believed to have escaped in a suspected cloned white Audi vehicle.

At this stage, the motive for the shooting remains unknown. SAPS has emphasised that investigations are ongoing and that no further details have been confirmed.

Police have appealed to members of the public who may have information that could assist investigators to contact the Crime Stop line on 08600 10111, or to submit tip-offs anonymously via the MySAPS
