A suspected cable theft attempt in Booysens Reserve, Johannesburg, ended in tragedy after a man was discovered dead inside a medium-voltage electrical chamber on Thursday morning, 22 October 2026.
The discovery was made after City Power personnel found that the chamber’s access door had been forced open, raising suspicions of unauthorised entry into the electrical infrastructure. A cable-cutting tool was reportedly found in the deceased man’s possession, while signs of tampering with electrical equipment were also identified at the scene.
The circumstances surrounding the man’s death have not yet been established, and it remains unclear whether he suffered an electrical injury. The incident also disrupted electricity supply to nine load centres, with power temporarily interrupted while members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) conducted their investigation.
The discovery highlights the dangers associated with unauthorised access to electrical infrastructure, particularly medium-voltage installations where contact with live equipment can result in serious injury or death. Cable theft and infrastructure tampering also pose risks to electricity supply, potentially affecting households, businesses and essential services.
Police investigations are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, including how the man entered the chamber and what led to his death. At the time of reporting, the deceased’s identity had not been provided, and no further details about the cause of death were available.
The incident serves as a reminder of the serious safety risks associated with interference in electrical installations.
