In a recent crackdown on counterfeit and illicit trade, the Gauteng Counterfeit Unit, SAPS Lenasia and Gauteng Wardens conducted a joint operation in Lenasia, leading to the arrest of eight suspects and the seizure of goods valued at R572,490 on Tuesday, 29 October.

The operation was aimed at combating the proliferation of counterfeit goods and illicit trade in the area.

During the operation, police seized 4,001 illicit items, which included cellphone accessories, consumable goods, and pharmaceutical products. Of the eight suspects taken into custody, seven were apprehended for dealing in illicit goods, while one individual faced charges of theft.

Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi praised the collaborative efforts, stating, “This operation demonstrates the Gauteng Police’s commitment to combating counterfeit and illicit trade, protecting consumers and legitimate businesses.” The confiscated items will undergo further inspection, while investigations continue to determine the source and distribution channels of the seized goods.

The suspects are expected to appear before the Magistrate Court in the coming days, where they will face formal charges. This operation underscores the police’s ongoing resolve to safeguard the public from potentially harmful counterfeit products and support the region’s legitimate economy.
