The South African Weather Service has issued a warning for severe thunderstorms expected to hit most parts of the City of Johannesburg on Tuesday, 15 October 2024. The storms carry a significant risk of flash floods and traffic disruptions across the city.

Robert Mulaudzi, Communications Manager for the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS), urged residents to remain vigilant, particularly those living in low-lying areas.

“Residents are advised to avoid crossing river streams during these storms and to be cautious while conducting their daily activities. Motorists should exercise extreme care on the roads, maintain a safe following distance, and avoid crossing flooded roads or bridges,” Mulaudzi warned.

The City of Johannesburg EMS remains on high alert, with specialized units such as the Aquatic Rescue Unit on standby to respond to any water-related emergencies. The EMS is actively monitoring all seven regions of the city to ensure quick and effective response where needed.

In the event of life-threatening emergencies, residents are encouraged to contact the EMS Call Centre at 011 375 5911.
