UPDATE: City Power launches DIY Meter recoding for faster TID Program rollout

City Power is introducing a new initiative to expedite the Token Identifier (TID) program rollout. Starting Monday, 15 April 2024, customers can recode their prepaid meters themselves using an automated system.

This “do-it-yourself” (DIY) method aims to ensure all prepaid meters are upgraded by the November 24th deadline. The program has faced delays due to challenges gaining access to properties. By enabling self-service upgrades, City Power hopes to significantly increase the conversion rate.

Out of 283,966 registered prepaid meters, only 38,474 have been converted and 84,998 audited. With only six months left until the November deadline, over 245,000 meters require conversion. The DIY approach aims to accelerate the TID rollout and ensure customers can purchase electricity tokens after November.

What to Expect During the DIY Process

  • A new series of vending codes will be introduced.
  • Customers who don’t upgrade by November will be unable to top up their electricity.
  • City Power will share a schedule specifying conversion dates for each suburb.
  • Technicians will be available to assist customers facing difficulties during recoding.
  • Upon activation in a specific area, customers will receive three new token codes with their next purchase.

Important Reminders

  • Residents in areas activated from April 15th are urged to use existing tokens before conversion, as they will become invalid afterward.
  • City Power will communicate through various channels to keep customers informed.

By working together through this DIY program, City Power and residents can ensure a smooth transition to the new meter system.

    Hello CP –
I purchase my recharge tokens via the FNB app and i get my recharge code via SMS.

Will I get 3 codes via SMS the next time I purchase via the FNB app or must I instead purchase from a store like Pick n Pay?

    Please advise –
    Thank you
