On Friday, 14 April, ActionSA members led by party president, Herman Mashaba, took to the streets of Ward 7 to campaign ahead of by-elections scheduled to take place on 28 June following the resignation of former African National Congress (ANC) councillor Amelia Zama, who jumped ship and joined the Patriotic Alliance (PA).

Action SA members went door-to-door in Finetown and Ennerdale canvassing for votes, and hanging placards on street lights on Phillip Street and outside the Finetown Clinic. Mashaba and his members interacted with Finetown residents encouraging them to cast their vote and even bought kotas (Bunny Chows) from Hosanna Kota Shop – one of the small businesses in Finetown.

“We are in this ward to ensure that the City of Johannesburg in council is well represented and to avoid an ANC coalition,” said Mashaba.

Touching on Ennerdale’s Zozo Park, Mashaba said: “One of our activists brought us here, where people have been living here for over 20 years with majority of them not having IDs – meaning they cannot access grants, we appeal to the Department of Home Affairs to intervene and make arrangements for this community to get their IDs so that they can access opportunities and facilities offered in our country.”

Ward 7 faces many socio-economic challenges ranging from unemployment, crime to electricity woes amongst many others.
