In the early hours of Monday, 19 June, Lenasia South residents were once again rattled awake by bomb blasts when a group of men clad in balaclavas bombed an ATM at the BP garage on Sheffield street in Ext 4.

“It is reported that about seven men wearing balaclavas fled with an undisclosed amount of money from the bombed ATM and also entered the convenience store at the filling station and threatened the employees with a firearm before robbing them of their cellphones. One of the employees was reported injured while trying to escape. No suspects have been arrested as yet. Police are investigating a case of business robbery,” SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulw, told GLOBE POST.
This incident follows a chain of ATM bombings in the area, on 31 May, a Nedbank ATM on BP Wimbledon was bombed and three men were arrested with dye stained gloves.
On 23 November 2022, four ATM’s were blasted open at BP Wimbledon following another ATM bombing at the BP K43 6 September.
It appears there is an ATM bombing syndicate operating in the area causing heavy damage to the local economy and placing a strain on residents who frequent the ATMs to withdraw their funds.
