The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport is strengthening efforts to ensure scholar transport operators comply with licensing requirements and vehicle safety standards as preparations begin for the 2027 school year. The department engaged scholar transport operators at Boekenhoutkloof Traffic College in Tshwane on 17 October as part of its Learner Transport Education and Awareness Programme (LTEAP).
The initiative aims to improve compliance, promote responsible driving and address concerns about learner transport incidents across the province. During the engagement, operators were reminded of their legal responsibilities, including obtaining valid operating licences, ensuring vehicles are roadworthy and following road traffic laws.
The department also highlighted the Gauteng Public Transport Regulatory Information System (GPTRIS), which is intended to improve access to licensing information and make application processes more efficient. According to the department, feedback from operators will help shape further interventions to improve compliance and coordination between transport operators, schools, parents, law enforcement agencies and government departments. The awareness programme will be rolled out through a structured roadshow across all five regions of Gauteng. The department has urged operators to work with officials and ensure they meet the legal requirements for transporting learners.
Parents and guardians are also encouraged to check that transport providers have the necessary documentation and use safe, roadworthy vehicles when arranging transport for children. With the new school year approaching, families are encouraged to raise concerns about unsafe driving or vehicles with the relevant authorities.
