Fred Norman Secondary opens Media Centre for learners

Located in Ennerdale, the new facility offers internet access and donated reading materials, with the school still seeking furniture, computers and printers. Financial support came from PAW, a California-based church, whose delegation was led by Bishop Hunt.

Pupils from all backgrounds at the school will have access to a space where they can read, study and improve their English language skills. Fred Norman Secondary School officially opened its media centre on 20 October, providing learners with a space to read, study and complete schoolwork during breaks and after school. The facility is intended to support learners who live in informal settlements and may not have access to books, internet connectivity or a suitable study environment at home.

Principal De Villiers told Globe Post that the centre would give learners an opportunity to focus on their education outside classroom hours. The initiative aims to improve learners’ English proficiency by encouraging reading, writing, research and regular engagement with educational materials. Access to books and online resources will help learners expand their vocabulary, strengthen their comprehension and develop their ability to express themselves in English.

“These skills are important for academic performance across subjects, as well as preparing learners for further education and future employment opportunities” the Principal said.

The project took time to complete because the school did not have sufficient funding to finish the building. Principal De Villiers also told Globe Post that the school had gone without funding for two years to complete the ceiling and install windows at the centre. The remaining work was eventually funded by PAW, a church based in California, United States. A delegation led by Bishop Hunt attended the school’s media centre opening.

The school already has books that were donated previously, while Wi-Fi connectivity is available to help learners access online educational materials and conduct research. However, additional resources are still needed to make the facility fully functional and comfortable for learners. The school requires bookshelves to organise its reading materials, chairs and tables for learners to study, at least three computers and two printers.

These resources would allow learners to conduct research, type assignments, print schoolwork and use digital learning platforms. The media centre is expected to become an important educational resource, particularly for learners whose home circumstances make studying difficult. The school’s need for additional furniture and equipment remains an opportunity for businesses, organisations and community members to contribute towards improving access to educational resources.
