On 19 June, the Lenasia South Youth Crime Prevention Desk, with support from stakeholders, hosted a vibrant Youth Imbizo at Touch Life Ministry in Hospital Hill. Held in celebration of Youth Month under the theme “Why Should We Die Young?”, the event brought together young people to confront and engage on the pressing issues and dangers they face daily in their communities.
Supported by the District Youth Desk and attracted over 60 young attendees. It created a vital platform for discussion around key issues affecting youth including unemployment; substance abuse; teenage pregnancy; gangsterism; mental health; and gender-based violence. Stakeholders such as SAPS; CPF; Traffic Wardens; DIA; Lifeline Johannesburg; the Men’s Forum; Thuthuzela Care Centre; local artists and community patrollers joined forces to deliver impactful messages and support.
Through open dialogue and shared stories, the youth were motivated, educated and encouraged to make informed choices. According to Dineo Hlungwane, Chairperson of the Youth Crime Prevention Desk, the day was a great success. “The youth left empowered, hopeful and better informed,” she said.
With unity, cultural pride and powerful engagement, the event proved that real change starts with conversation and commitment from the community. SAPS, CPF, Traffic Wardens, DIA, Lifeline Johannesburg, the Men’s Forum, Youth Crime Prevention Desk, Thuthuzela Care Centre, local artists and community patrollers came together to celebrate Youth Day with purpose and unity.
