The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) responded to a major multi-vehicle accident on Thursday, 8 May, at around 19:30. The crash occurred at the intersection of Provincial Road and Laste Ag-gaat Street in Ennerdale Ext 5.

Upon arrival, JMPD officers found five vehicles had been involved in the collision. Four drivers were still at the scene. One of them sustained critical injuries and was rushed to Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital for urgent treatment. Three of the drivers gave statements and were taken for alcohol testing. One tested significantly over the legal alcohol limit, recording 1.55 mg/l – well above the 0.24 mg/l threshold. That driver was arrested and detained at Ennerdale SAPS.

The fifth driver had already been taken to an unknown hospital by family members, who declined to provide further information. Preliminary reports suggest the crash may have been caused by drag racing involving an Audi and a VW Polo.

JMPD has opened a case of Reckless and Negligent Driving, as well as Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, for further investigation.

Issued by the JMPD Communication Unit Superintendent Xolani Fihla.
