SASSA gold card deadline: What beneficiaries must know before 20 March

The 20 March 2025 deadline for SASSA gold cards is fast approaching and social grant beneficiaries are urged to take action to avoid disruptions in their payments.

While many may assume that this date marks the end of gold card usage, it is important to clarify that Postbank will continue replacing SASSA gold cards with the new black Postbank cards beyond this date. However, beneficiaries still in possession of gold cards are strongly discouraged from attempting transactions with them after 20 March, even if they have available funds, to prevent disappointment.

To ensure that grant payments scheduled for 3–5 April 2025 are processed smoothly, beneficiaries should prioritise collecting their new black cards as soon as possible. While Postbank has committed to completing the card replacement process by June 2025, beneficiaries are encouraged to make use of the remaining time in March and early April to swap their gold cards.

This proactive approach will prevent unnecessary delays and ensure continued access to funds. For those who have not yet replaced their gold cards, grant payments will still be accessible. Beneficiaries can withdraw their funds at one of the 543 Post Office branches nationwide by presenting their green barcoded ID, smart card ID, or temporary ID.

It is important to note that Post Office cash withdrawals will only be available for beneficiaries who have not yet replaced their gold cards, asylum seekers and Postbank Mzansi/blue card holders. Those who already have the new black Postbank cards must use ATMs and retailers for transactions, as Post Office branches will not assist them with in-branch cash withdrawals.

To accommodate beneficiaries who are bedridden or have severe disabilities preventing them from visiting card replacement sites, SASSA and Postbank have introduced a home visit programme. Beneficiaries who qualify for home visits must provide medical confirmation of their condition and schedule an appointment through SASSA (0800 60 10 11) or Postbank (0800 53 54 55).

Only individuals who genuinely meet the criteria should request home visits, as improper requests will incur a R250 fine. Beneficiaries are also strongly warned against being misled into switching banks. Only Postbank is authorised to replace SASSA gold cards with black Postbank cards. Scammers may attempt to convince beneficiaries to change banks without their consent and individuals are advised to remain cautious and ensure they obtain their new cards from official Postbank replacement sites only.

For any further enquiries, beneficiaries can contact Postbank at 0800 53 54 55 or SASSA at 0800 60 10 11.
