The Pretoria Central Magistrate’s Court has granted bail of R1 500 to a 22-year-old speedster, who was arrested on Sunday, 16 April for excessive speeding.

His motorbike clocked 223 km/h on the N1 freeway near Centurion in an area with a prescribed maximum limit of 120 km/h. The speedster allegedly told the officers that he was rushing to Krugersdorp for a jolly day.

He was arrested on the spot and taken to Lyttleton police station where he was formally charged with reckless and negligent driving as well as an alternative charge of exceeding the general speed limit.

“Excessive speeding remains one of the biggest risks to road safety in the province. Majority of road fatalities are as a result of reckless and negligent driving, driving under the influence of alcohol and dangerous overtaking especially in the face of oncoming traffic,” said Sello Maremane, Gauteng Traffic Police’s spokesperson.

“I would like to urge all law enforcement officers to leave no stone unturned in dealing decisively with those who continue to disregard the rules of the road, thus putting the lives of road users at risk,” Maremane added.
