Protesting City of Johannesburg employees affiliated with SAMWU have dispersed following the earlier closure of the M1 and M2 highways in Braamfontein and the Johannesburg CBD. It is understood that the members are aggrieved over wage disputes after an attempted engagement with the City’s leadership this morning in Braamfontein. Reports indicate that an agreement was reached for them to disperse, though they have indicated that they will return tomorrow. Traffic remains heavy in the area.
Meanwhile in statement released by the City of Johannesburg earlier, strongly condemned the illegal actions taken by members of the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) who embarked on a march to the Sappi building, despite being granted time off for a briefing on the implementation of the phase two of the Politically Facilitated Agreement (PFA).
The City had also provided transportation for the briefing in good faith. However, instead of utilising this opportunity for constructive engagement, SAMWU members chose to participate in an unauthorised march, which puts people’s lives at risk.
The City views these actions as unacceptable and illegal. As a result, it is left with no choice but to consider approaching the Labour Court for an urgent interdict to prevent further disruptions.
The City urges SAMWU members to refrain from participating in any further illegal activities, respect agreements, and use legitimate processes to engage on outstanding issues. The City of Johannesburg remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all its citizens and will not tolerate any actions that compromise public order and safety
