A weekend crime prevention operation led by the Johannesburg District Police has resulted in the arrest of 58 suspects for a range of offences in the Florida and Ennerdale policing precincts.
The operation, conducted on Sunday, 26 July, formed part of the South African Police Service’s ongoing Operation Shanela II, aimed at combating crime, improving public safety and ensuring compliance with the law.
Constable Dakalo Phemula said officers arrested suspects for offences including possession of an unlicensed firearm, drug possession, public drinking, immigration-related offences and possession of dangerous weapons.
Among those arrested was one suspect found in possession of an unlicensed 9mm pistol, two magazines and 12 live rounds of ammunition. Police also arrested 18 suspects for possession of drugs, 10 illegal immigrants, 15 people for drinking in public, one suspect for possession of a dangerous weapon, and several others for various offences.
“As part of the ongoing efforts to combat crime, enhance public safety and enforce compliance with the law across the district, the operation resulted in the arrest of over 58 suspects for various criminal offences,” said Phemula.
Police also carried out liquor compliance inspections during the operation, leading to the closure of three non-compliant liquor outlets. Officers confiscated more than 46 620ml of liquor during the inspections.
Phemula added: “All arrested suspects are expected to appear in the various magistrates’ courts soon.”
Johannesburg District Commissioner Major General Nonhlanhla Kubheka commended police members and stakeholders who took part in the operation, praising their dedication.
Kubheka said Operation Shanela II will continue to be intensified throughout the district “to ensure that criminals are brought to book and that communities remain safe.”
