Held under the theme “Dancing Through the Years”, the festival brought together elderly people from various clubs and old age homes, giving them an opportunity to step away from their daily routines and enjoy a special day filled with entertainment and activities. Organisers created a festival atmosphere with a stage setup and live musical performances, bringing back memories of the jazz festivals many senior citizens enjoyed in the past.
Speaking to GLOBE POST, Yolanda Duze, from Sekgome Resort, the intention was to recreate that experience by offering the elderly a proper festival environment. The day’s programme started with breakfast, followed by a live band performance and lunch. Attendees also received complimentary massages from Lulama Spa Beauty and free haircuts from Legends Barber.
The event was made possible through partnerships with Siz Catering, Legends Barber, Lulama Spa Beauty and UDO Sound and Staging. Beyond the entertainment, the gathering provided an opportunity for senior citizens, particularly those living in old age homes, to spend time outdoors, socialise and reconnect with others.
Last year’s festival also created special memories when some attendees were treated to helicopter rides, an experience that was a first for many. Duze also thanked the volunteers who contributed towards making the event successful, acknowledging Ashleigh Peacock, Caitlyn Peacock, Chloe Ryland, Kesley-Ann Baaitjies, Imaan Duze, Melonie Fisher, Zinan Fisher, Caslyn Morris, Shervaun Bracks, and Theola and JP Okkers.
The annual initiative continues to recognise and celebrate older people by creating opportunities for enjoyment, companionship and meaningful community connections.
