The National Youth Service (NYS) team has visited Cricket South Africa (CSA) in Lenasia to gain insight into how sport can contribute to youth empowerment, skills development and community growth.

The site visit brought the NYS team into engagement with CSA’s implementing team on the ground, providing an opportunity to learn more about the programme’s activities and its role in creating meaningful opportunities for young people. While cricket was at the centre of the visit, the engagement highlighted a broader objective: using sport as a platform to help young people build confidence, develop teamwork, acquire valuable skills and gain practical experience that could support their future prospects.

Through initiatives that combine sport with personal development, young people can develop qualities that extend beyond the playing field, including discipline, collaboration and the ability to work towards shared goals.

The visit also emphasised the importance of partnerships in ensuring that youth development programmes translate into meaningful outcomes for communities. Collaboration between the NYS programme and implementing partners such as CSA provides an opportunity to strengthen programme delivery and support activities that align with the broader vision of youth empowerment.

Ongoing engagement and monitoring were also highlighted as important measures for ensuring that programme activities remain aligned with NYS objectives and continue to respond to the needs of young people. As communities continue to seek opportunities to equip young people with relevant skills and experience, initiatives that combine sport, learning and community participation can play a valuable role in supporting their development.

The NYS site visit in Lenasia underscored the importance of investing in young people through partnerships that encourage personal growth, strengthen skills and help prepare them for future opportunities.
