Residents along Sheffield Street and in the Fountain Square area of Lenasia South Extension 1 are calling for urgent intervention from City Power after experiencing high and low electricity voltage over the past two days, leaving some fearing for their safety inside their own homes.

According to residents, the electricity problems have affected several households along Sheffield Street and in the nearby Fountain Square area this week, with concerns that the fluctuations could cause further damage to appliances and expose adults, children and elderly people to potential electrical hazards. One resident expressed frustration over the situation, saying the problem had not been fully resolved despite efforts to report it.

“Our homes on Sheffield have become a hazard to live in because we are shocking in the bathrooms and at the plug points, and there has been no full resolution of this matter,” the resident said. The resident further reported that electricity could be felt through plug points, taps and shower fittings, raising concerns about the potential danger to people using ordinary household facilities. Several neighbours are also reportedly affected.

Residents of Fountain Square are experiencing similar electricity problems, raising further concerns about the extent of the voltage fluctuations affecting households in the area. Residents also say household appliances have been damaged during periods of high voltage, adding to the financial strain and uncertainty faced by affected families.

Residents say they lodged a complaint with City Power on Tuesday but did not receive a meaningful response until recently. Although City Power has reportedly indicated that teams are on site, residents remain concerned about whether the intervention will address the underlying problem permanently.

Some residents believe the electricity infrastructure serving the area may be struggling to meet demand, raising concerns about possible overloading. This claim has not been independently confirmed.

Residents say similar problems have persisted despite previous interventions, leaving them questioning whether the repairs being undertaken will provide lasting relief. For affected households in Sheffield Street and Fountain Square, the issue extends beyond the inconvenience of unreliable electricity. The reported shocks and damage to appliances have raised serious concerns about the safety of people living in the area.

Families with young children and elderly relatives are particularly worried about the possibility of someone being injured while carrying out everyday activities at home. Globe Post contacted the relevant municipal authorities seeking comment on the reported electricity problems, the cause of the voltage fluctuations, the allegations concerning illegal connections and what measures are being taken to resolve the issue permanently.

At the time of publication, no response had been received.

Residents are calling on City Power to investigate the problem, establish its cause and implement a lasting solution that will ensure a safe and reliable electricity supply to affected households in both Sheffield Street and Fountain Square.

They also want clear communication from the utility about the work being carried out, the expected timeframe for resolving the issue and what residents should do if they continue experiencing electrical shocks.

Until the matter is resolved, residents say the uncertainty surrounding the electricity supply remains a source of concern in their homes.

Globe Post will update this article should City Power or the City of Johannesburg provide further information.
