Residents in Soweto are assessing the impact of a severe storm that damaged two prominent community institutions, prompting an emergency response from the City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services (EMS).
Sections of the roofs at Regina Mundi Church in Moroka and Reutlwile Secondary School in Molapo were partially blown away during the storm on Monday afternoon. No injuries were reported at either location.
According to The Citizen’s senior journalist, Faizel Patel, City of Johannesburg EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi confirmed that firefighters responded to both incidents.
The first incident occurred at Regina Mundi Church, a well-known landmark in Soweto, followed by a response to Reutlwile Secondary School, a public no-fee school in Molapo.
Despite the damage, authorities confirmed that no injuries had been reported
The city’s specialised emergency teams, including search and rescue personnel and the swift water rescue unit, remained on high alert overnight in anticipation of possible weather-related emergencies.
Mulaudzi urged residents to report life-threatening emergencies to the City of Johannesburg EMS command and control centre on 011 375 5911.
The storm serves as a reminder of the risks severe weather poses to community facilities and public infrastructure.
