Suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) deputy chief, Julius Mkhwanazi, is expected to appear before the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court today, 20 April, following his arrest in connection with corruption and fruad related offences.
Mkhwanazi, 50, was arrested on 18 April 2026 by the South African Police Service (SAPS) Madlanga Commission Task Team at his home in Gauteng. He faces charges of fraud, corruption, and defeating or obstructing the ends of justice.
The arrest forms part of an ongoing investigation into alleged corruption within the EMPD. Authorities say the probe is linked to findings and leads emerging from the Madlanga Commission, which has been examining misconduct within law enforcement structures.
In a statement, SAPS spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said: “The Task Team is still searching for other suspects linked to the case,” indicating that more arrests could follow as the investigation unfolds.
Further details are likely to emerge as the case proceeds in court.
