The SA Hindu community came together on Sunday, 8 October 2023, to observe the 2nd Annual Pitr Paksh Shraddh Pooja – Pandita Lucy Sigaban reports… Remembering our Ancestors at the Lenasia Crematorium. This heartfelt event witnessed an overwhelming turnout from the Johannesburg community, with 32 families participating in the poignant prayer ceremony.

Notable figures in attendance included Pastor Napier, Chairman of Divine Intervention at SAPS Lenasia, and Ebrahim Asvat, Chairman of the Community Policing Forum (CPF) in Lenasia. Pastor Napier underscored the significance of interfaith prayer and called upon the community to collaborate with law enforcement. In a show of unity, three members of the Lenasia SAPS team joined the prayer, with Constable Ndzimeni expressing their support, stating, “Ancestral worship is important across many faiths, and we are glad to be part of today’s prayer to understand your rituals and to demonstrate our support in your prayers as well.”

The atmosphere during the prayer was elevated by the melodious bhajans by renowned bhajan singer Bhushan Dass, captivating the hearts of all in attendance.

Expressing their gratitude, participants lauded the Pitr Paksh Shraddh Pooja, emphasizing its significance. Participants partook in the essential rituals like Tarpan, Shraddh, Pind Daan, and food offerings to seek blessings and guidance from their forefathers. These rituals also aim to ensure a peaceful journey for their ancestors in the afterlife.

In a gesture of appreciation for their dedication, hampers were distributed to the ground staff at the crematorium, acknowledging and thanking them for the work they do.

SA Hindus extend their heartfelt appreciation to the SA Hindus team and dedicated volunteers who worked tirelessly to make this event a resounding success.

This annual event serves as a reminder of the unifying power of faith and community, fostering understanding and harmony among diverse groups in Johannesburg. SA Hindus looks forward to continuing this tradition of spiritual togetherness in the years to come.
