The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) remains steadfast in our commitment to ensuring road safety and reducing the scourge of alcohol-related incidents on our roads.

During a series of intensified multidisciplinary operations, high-visibility roadblocks, and roving patrols conducted across all regions of the City of Johannesburg from Monday, 19th January 2026, to Sunday, 25th January 2026, JMPD officers arrested 225 individuals for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) of alcohol.

These arrests highlight the ongoing challenge of motorists who continue to disregard the law and the safety of others. Driving under the influence is a serious criminal offence that significantly increases the risk of fatal crashes. Each arrest made represents a proactive step in preventing potential tragedies and protecting the lives of law-abiding residents and visitors.

JMPD Chief of Police, Commissioner Patrick Jaca, has expressed concern over the high number of arrests, stating, “It is deeply troubling that 225 motorists made the conscious decision to get behind the wheel while intoxicated in just one week. Our message is clear: if you choose to drink and drive, you will be arrested. We will not tolerate behaviour that endangers our community.”

The JMPD urges all road users to exercise responsibility. If you plan to consume alcohol, please arrange for alternative transport, utilise e-hailing services, or designate a sober driver.

The department will continue its zero-tolerance approach, with officers deployed 24/7 across major routes and known hotspots to ensure that the rule of law is maintained.
