A karate development initiative founded by Mabati Makwela is making strides in youth empowerment, celebrating eight black belt achievements while preparing to expand into Phumlamqashi.

Moshito oTswelapele Karate Academy NPO, founded by Mabati Makwela, recently hosted a special karate training, grading recognition and recruitment event at the Lenasia South Civic Centre.

The event was organised by Makwela and his foundation, which is affiliated with the South African Kyokushinkai Karate Academy (SAKKA), itself affiliated with the international World Sabaki Federation (WSF).

The programme was supported by Karate Master Korning Molefi Moloto, founder of the SAKKA, who continues to play an important role in developing karate practitioners and promoting the sport within local communities.

The event also celebrated the recent Dan grading achievements of eight karate practitioners, including Makwela, who attained his Third Dan black belt.

Other successful candidates were Aden Kolobe and Tebogo Ntsoane, who achieved Second Dan rankings, while Moraswi Mooa, Selogadi Masemola, Phuti Mokgehle, Katlego Moloto and Maleshoane Moloto earned First Dan rankings.

Karate as a Tool for Youth Development

Originally established in Lenasia South and Zakariyya Park, Moshito oTswelapele Karate Academy NPO provides structured martial arts training that promotes discipline, respect, confidence, physical fitness and self-defence.

Makwela leads the academy alongside Senpai Given Ngoepe, who serves as second-in-command.

The academy aims to provide young people with a constructive sporting environment while developing future karate champions.

Building on its work in Lenasia South and Zakariyya Park, Makwela and his foundation hope to establish another karate training centre in Phumlamqashi.

The expansion would create additional opportunities for children and young people who may otherwise have limited access to organised sporting activities.

However, the foundation is appealing for sponsorships, donations and community partnerships to help provide uniforms, protective equipment, training resources and other necessities.

With the support of SAKKA and its international affiliation, the initiative seeks to strengthen grassroots karate development and open pathways for aspiring martial artists.

The academy welcomes children, teenagers and adults interested in learning karate, regardless of their experience.

Residents wishing to register, sponsor the foundation or assist with its planned expansion can contact Mabati Makwela for further information.

Training venues: Lenasia South Civic Centre and Zakariyya Park Hall
Training days: Monday to Thursday
Training times: 4pm–6pm
