Huigi Heyes will represent Gauteng Province at the National Boxing Championships in Kimberley in December after securing his place through the provincial competition.
Heyes progressed through the Johannesburg and Gauteng boxing championships, earning victories along the way to qualify for the national event.
His journey began at the Johannesburg Championships, where he secured a win before advancing to the Gauteng Championships. He was one of two boxers from Lenasia South Boxing Club who competed at the provincial championships, alongside Muhammad Noor Kassam.The national championships will give Heyes the chance to compete against young boxers from across the country and gain experience at a higher level.
A strong showing in Kimberley could also create further opportunities for the young boxer, including possible consideration for selection to represent South Africa. For Lenasia South Boxing Club, Heyes’ achievement highlights the role of sport in creating opportunities for young people to develop their skills and talents.
The club offers boxing and fitness training while encouraging young people to develop discipline, confidence and commitment through regular participation in sport.
With preparations for the championships under way, the club is appealing to local businesses, organisations and community members who may be able to assist Heyes with the trip to Kimberley. Support could help with travel, accommodation, equipment and other competition-related costs.
