The Gauteng Department of Education has recorded 805 688 applications for Grade 1 and Grade 8 placement for the 2027 academic year, as thousands of parents and guardians across the province seek places for their children in public schools. The high number of applications reflects the continued demand for education in Gauteng, particularly in communities where population growth and new residential developments are placing additional pressure on existing school infrastructure.

The online admissions application period closed at midnight on 4 September, with the Department now moving into the verification and placement phase. Before learners can be placed, submitted documents will be checked to ensure that the information provided by parents and guardians is accurate and that supporting documents are authentic. The Department has urged parents to ensure that any outstanding documentation is submitted within the prescribed period to avoid delays during the placement process.

Guardians whose applications have outstanding documents have until 12:00 noon on 11 September, to submit certified copies. One of the most important documents is proof of home address, as the learner’s residential address plays a major role in determining which schools they qualify for under the Department’s placement criteria. Parents are therefore encouraged to ensure that the address submitted during the application process is accurate and supported by the required documentation.

Gauteng Education MEC Lebogang Maile said the large number of applications provides the Department with valuable information about the changing needs of communities and where pressure on the education system is most concentrated. “These figures are more than admissions statistics. They tell us where families are settling, where communities are expanding, where parental demand is concentrated and where the public education system is experiencing the greatest pressure,” said Maile.

The Department will not allocate places simply according to when an application was submitted. Instead, applications will be considered according to a prescribed order of priority, with the learner’s relationship to the school and the distance between the learner’s home and the school being among the key considerations.

The first priority will be given to learners whose home address falls within the school’s feeder zone and who live closest to the school. The next priority will apply to learners who have a sibling already attending the school. For Grade 8 applicants, proximity to the learner’s previous school will also be considered. Applications where a parent’s place of work falls within the school’s feeder zone will then be considered, followed by learners whose home addresses are within 30 kilometres of the school and, thereafter, those living more than 30 kilometres away.

The emphasis on addresses is intended to help the Department manage demand fairly and ensure that schools primarily serve learners from the surrounding communities. Parents have previously been warned against providing incorrect residential or work addresses in an attempt to improve their chances of securing a place at a particular school, as information submitted during the admissions process is subject to verification.

The large application figure also comes as Gauteng continues to experience significant pressure on its public school system. Rapidly growing communities, particularly those on the outskirts of the province and in areas experiencing extensive residential development, have increased the demand for classrooms and school places. The admissions figures assist the Department in identifying areas where additional capacity and resources may be required as it prepares for the new academic year.

For parents and guardians, the next important stage will be the issuing of placement offers. The Department has scheduled the first placement offers to commence on Thursday, 15 October, with guardians who have complete applications receiving an offer or provisional offer via SMS.

Once an offer has been received, parents and guardians will have seven days to accept the offer or provisional offer. They are therefore encouraged to monitor the cellphone number used during the application process and respond within the prescribed period. Parents who do not receive an SMS immediately should also avoid submitting duplicate applications, as this could complicate the admissions process.

The Department is expected to continue processing applications and verifying supporting documents ahead of the October placement period. Parents are encouraged to use the remaining time to check that their applications are complete and that all outstanding certified documents, particularly proof of address, have been submitted before the 11 September deadline.

With more than 800 000 applications recorded, the coming months will be closely watched by families waiting to find out where their children will begin the 2027 school year. For many households, the placement outcome will determine not only the school their children attend but also issues such as daily travel, transport costs and access to schools within their communities.
