Kidnapping cases climb in Ennerdale, latest crime figures show

Ennerdale has recorded an increase in kidnapping cases, with the latest police crime statistics showing 37 cases between April and June 2026 — the highest first-quarter figure for the station in five years.

The latest South African Police Service (SAPS) crime statistics have placed kidnapping in Ennerdale under the spotlight after cases increased compared with the corresponding period last year.

According to the SAPS first-quarter crime statistics for the 2026/27 financial year, Ennerdale recorded 37 kidnapping cases between April and June 2026, compared with 32 cases during the same period in 2025. This represents an increase of five cases, or approximately 15.6%.

The latest figure is particularly concerning when viewed against the five-year trend contained in the report. Ennerdale recorded 19 kidnapping cases in 2022, before the number climbed to 34 in 2023. It dropped to 27 cases in 2024 before increasing again to 32 in 2025 and reaching 37 during the latest reporting period.

This means the number of kidnapping cases recorded during the first quarter has almost doubled when compared with the same period in 2022. From 19 cases five years ago to the latest 37, the statistics show an increase of 18 cases over the comparable three-month periods.

Ennerdale’s figures have also placed the police station among the country’s higher-ranked stations for kidnapping. According to the report, Ennerdale was ranked 16th nationally and 13th in Gauteng for the crime during the April-to-June 2026 period.

The figures add another dimension to ongoing concerns around serious crime in Ennerdale and surrounding communities, where GLOBE POST has continued to report on police operations, robberies and other crimes affecting residents and businesses.

Recent police operations across the broader Ennerdale policing area and Johannesburg South have also highlighted law enforcement’s continued focus on wanted suspects and serious offences. Operations such as Shanela have resulted in numerous arrests as police intensify crime-prevention activities and searches for suspects linked to different offences.

However, the latest statistics do not provide details about the circumstances surrounding each of Ennerdale’s 37 kidnapping counts. The figures alone therefore cannot establish whether the cases were connected, what motivated individual incidents, or where within the policing precinct they occurred.

The increase nevertheless shows a clear upward movement in the number of kidnapping cases recorded at the station during comparable first-quarter periods. After falling from 34 cases in 2023 to 27 in 2024, Ennerdale has now experienced increases for two consecutive years, reaching its five-year high of 37.

SAPS crime statistics are based on crimes recorded by police and should also be interpreted accordingly. The report explains that its measuring unit is the number of charges or counts rather than simply the number of case dockets, meaning one docket may contain more than one count.

For Ennerdale residents, the latest numbers place renewed attention on community safety and crime prevention as the station enters the remainder of the 2026/27 financial year. Whether the upward movement in kidnapping cases continues or begins to decline will become clearer as subsequent quarterly crime statistics are released.
