Siyaphambili Projects, a local non-profit organisation aimed at promoting education in the community, hosted a science quiz competition on 13 August, to encourage a stronger love for Maths and Science among learners.
The competition brought together learners from Gibson Pillay Learning Academy, Lotus School of Excellence, Nirvana Secondary School and Northriding Secondary School, who showcased their knowledge, skills and passion for science.
Gibson Pillay Learning Academy emerged as the winner of the Battle of the Minds competition after learners put their science knowledge to the test against the other participating schools.
Speaking to GLOBE POST, teacher Avril Morgan said the learners put significant effort into preparing for the competition.
“The learners prepared themselves by revising the Grade 10 and Grade 11 physics syllabus. They really studied hard for the competition,” Morgan said.
The Battle of the Minds initiative seeks to expose more young people to Maths and Science while creating a platform where learners can challenge themselves, build confidence and develop a greater interest in the subjects.
In the spirit of Women’s Month, Siyaphambili Projects founder Florence Mlweli also handed out toiletries to participants during the event.
The competition provided learners with an opportunity to put their classroom knowledge into practice while interacting with learners from other schools in a fun and educational environment.
For Gibson Pillay Learning Academy, the hard work and preparation paid off as the school walked away as the winner of the competition.
