The Gauteng Department of Education has recorded a strong start to its 2027 Online Admissions process, receiving more than 210 000 Grade 1 and Grade 8 applications within the first four hours of opening.

The online system went live at 08:00 on Wednesday, 5 August, and by 12:00 had received 210 055 applications. More than 12 000 parents had already joined the online queue before the system officially opened, with the department reporting no major technical problems.

Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Lebogang Maile welcomed the response, saying it reflects the confidence parents have in the province’s education system.

“The strong response to the 2027 Online Admissions process reflects parents’ confidence in Gauteng’s education system. We encourage parents to apply early, make use of the Department’s free support centres if they need assistance, and remain vigilant against scammers promising guaranteed school placements,” said Maile.

Parents are urged not to wait until the final days of the application period, as applying early provides enough time to upload supporting documents and resolve any outstanding issues. Applicants should choose a minimum of three and a maximum of five schools and submit certified supporting documents within seven days of completing their application.

The department also reminded parents that the online admissions process is free of charge and warned against individuals or organisations claiming they can guarantee school placements in exchange for payment.

The application period will remain open until midnight on Friday, 4 September 2026. Parents can apply through the official Gauteng Online Admissions website at www.gdeadmissions.gov.za.

The department also called on young people to assist parents, grandparents and community members who may need support with the online application process, reinforcing the message that ensuring access to quality education is a shared responsibility.
