GLOBE POST publisher and veteran community journalist Shirley Govender has been named a finalist in the Community Service Reporting category of the prestigious 2026 Standard Bank Sikuvile Journalism Awards, one of South Africa’s highest honours in journalism.

Govender was shortlisted for her body of work focusing on early childhood education and a preschool in the heart of Lenasia South, published across GLOBE POST, ORANGE FARM NEWS AND WALKERVILLE AND SAVANNA CITY TIMES. The recognition places her alongside some of the country’s most respected journalists and media organisations.

The Standard Bank Sikuvile Journalism Awards celebrate excellence in journalism and recognise reporting that informs, empowers and serves communities across South Africa. Being selected as a finalist is a testament to the impact that community journalism continues to have in highlighting local challenges, solutions and stories that matter.

For Govender, the nomination is particularly meaningful because it acknowledges the importance of solutions-focused reporting and storytelling that amplifies the voices of ordinary people working to improve their communities.

“This recognition belongs not only to me but to every community member, educator, parent and child whose story has been entrusted to our publications. Community journalism has the power to shine a light on challenges while also showcasing the innovative solutions that exist within our neighbourhoods. I am honoured that stories from our communities have been recognised on a national stage,” she said.

The shortlisted body of work explored how quality early childhood development initiatives are creating opportunities for children and families in underserved communities. The reporting highlighted practical solutions, community-driven interventions and the vital role that early learning plays in breaking cycles of poverty and inequality.

For more than three decades, Govender has championed grassroots journalism through her independent community publications, ensuring that the stories, concerns and achievements of residents in Johannesburg’s south receive the attention they deserve.

The finalist announcement is also a proud moment for community media, demonstrating that local journalism can compete with the country’s largest news organisations while remaining deeply rooted in the communities it serves.

The winners of the 2026 Standard Bank Sikuvile Journalism Awards will be announced at the official awards ceremony later this year.

GLOBE POST, ORANGE FARM NEWS, and WALKERVILLE AND SAVANNA CITY TIMES extend their gratitude to readers, community partners, sources and supporters who continue to believe in the value of independent community journalism.

Together, we celebrate a milestone not only for our newsroom, but for every community whose stories deserve to be heard.
