The Nonhlanhla Kubheka has praised police officers and law enforcement agencies following the arrest of more than 430 suspects during crime prevention operations conducted across the Johannesburg District between 08 and 10 May.
Major General Kubheka commended members for their commitment to ensuring community safety during a series of coordinated operations, including Operation Shanela II, high-density operations, station commanders’ operations, and ad hoc roadblocks.
Police said about 59 suspects were arrested during Operation Shanela II conducted in the Lenasia and Jabulani policing precincts. Among those arrested were three suspects found in possession of unlicensed firearms.
During stop-and-search operations in Lenasia, officers recovered two 9mm pistols, while a revolver loaded with five live rounds of ammunition was seized in the Jabulani policing precinct. Police confirmed that the serial numbers on all three firearms had been filed off.
Authorities also arrested eight suspects for allegedly dealing in liquor without a licence during the operation.
In separate station commanders’ operations carried out across the district, police arrested 117 suspects for various offences.
An intelligence-driven operation in Alexandra on 08 May led to the arrest of a 23-year-old man for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Officers recovered a 9mm pistol, seven live rounds of ammunition, and two magazines.
In another breakthrough, police acting on intelligence information arrested a 38-year-old man in Eldorado Park on 10 May for unlawful possession of ammunition and drugs. Officers confiscated various revolver rounds, 14 mandrax tablets, and five grams of crystal meth.
Detectives across the district also tracked down and arrested approximately 178 suspects linked to various crimes, including 27 suspects wanted for gender-based violence-related offences.
Meanwhile, ad hoc roadblocks conducted at the N1 Grasmere Toll Plaza in Lenasia South and along the N14 freeway in Diepsloot resulted in the arrest of 13 illegal immigrants. Police also searched about 218 people and 267 vehicles during the operations.
Major General Kubheka said the continued operations demonstrate the commitment of law enforcement agencies to removing illegal firearms, drugs, and criminal elements from communities across Johannesburg.
