On 21 April, Ward 120 took a significant step toward tackling youth unemployment with the introduction of a SETA Skills Development Programme aimed at equipping young people with practical skills and workplace-ready qualifications. The 18-month programme is designed to break the cycle of unemployment by offering structured training that prepares participants for real-world work environments.
Some of the training fields include important skills such as Fire Fighting, First Aid, and other development programmes that empower young people with both knowledge and experience. This initiative has brought excitement and hope to many young people in the community. Over 450 youth members applied for the programme, showing the high demand for opportunities in Ward 120. However, the programme was only intended to take 50 participants, which clearly highlights the serious level of unemployment and the urgent need for more development programmes in the ward.
Lenasia South resident, Mlungisi Polite Ndlovu said: “We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Councillor Puseletso Nzimande and her team for their dedication, support, and commitment in ensuring that such opportunities reach the community directly. Their efforts have made a meaningful difference and brought real change to the lives of young people who are eager to grow and contribute positively. Ward 120 is home to many qualified and talented youth. Some have degrees, others have completed matric, and many have skills such as building, painting, and general labour experience. What they need most is access to opportunities that can help them develop further and earn a stable income.”
Ndlovu added: “We therefore invite private businesses, investors, and organisations to partner with the Ward 120 community in addressing the high level of unemployment. Any stakeholders who have employment opportunities, training programmes, internships, or business support initiatives are encouraged to visit the Councillor’s Office to explore ways of working together. If we join hands, we can create more opportunities for our youth, reduce crime, and fight social challenges that affect our communities. Ward 120 is a large ward with great potential, and it is time to invest in developing young minds and building a brighter future.”
The community hopes for more programmes like this that will continue to empower youth and bring lasting change to the community.
