Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) intensified its MegaBlitz programme with a high-impact intervention at Westpark Cemetery on Wednesday, 18 March, as teams from all seven regions converged in a unified operation to address critical maintenance backlogs.
This large-scale blitz focused on the management of the cemetery’s tree canopy and key horticultural concerns. Work undertaken included the pruning of trees to improve health and structure, the removal of dead and hazardous branches to enhance public safety, and the eradication of invasive alien creepers and overgrown shrubs that undermine both biodiversity and accessibility.
As one of Johannesburg’s most important heritage and burial sites, Westpark Cemetery holds deep cultural and historical significance. The intervention reflects JCPZ’s ongoing commitment to preserving the dignity of such spaces while ensuring they remain safe, accessible, and environmentally sustainable.
While the ideal approach is to address maintenance requirements proactively, ongoing inclement weather disruptions have contributed to the development of seasonal backlogs. These conditions necessitate intensified interventions such as the MegaBlitz programme to restore standards and accelerate service delivery where it is most needed.
The MegaBlitz programme continues to gain momentum across the city, reflecting JCPZ’s proactive response to environmental pressures while reinforcing routine maintenance operations. Through a structured, region-by-region approach, the initiative ensures focused deployment of resources, clear accountability, and visible impact in communities.
“Westpark Cemetery is not just a public space, it is a place of memory, heritage and reflection. Our responsibility is to honour that through consistent care and visible action. While seasonal weather patterns do at times impact our maintenance schedules, programmes like MegaBlitz allow us to respond decisively, restore dignity, and demonstrate our commitment to the residents of Johannesburg. This is what responsive and accountable service delivery looks like,” said Thanduxolo Mendrew, Managing Director of JCPZ.
