Residents in parts of Lawley Ext 2, south of Johannesburg, experienced unusual power fluctuations earlier this week after a fault on a transformer disrupted normal voltage supply to several households.
According to City Power Johannesburg, the issue occurred on Tuesday night and affected streets near Mahlangu Street and surrounding areas. Several residents reported electrical irregularities, with some homes receiving higher-than-normal voltage while others experienced reduced power levels.
City Power confirmed that multiple service calls were logged from residents in the area and that a technical team was dispatched to investigate. However, technicians were initially unable to address the specific fault because a broader power outage had simultaneously affected larger sections of Lawley Ext 2.
City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena, General Manager for Public Relations and Communication, said technicians had to prioritise restoring electricity to the wider area before they could investigate the reported fluctuations.
“Our technicians first had to restore supply to the affected area before they could safely conduct further technical investigations. Once supply was restored, the team proceeded to assess the voltage fluctuations and identified a fault on a transformer neutral jumper,” Mangena explained.
A compromised neutral connection can disrupt the balance of electrical phases supplied to homes, which may result in uneven voltage levels across households. In practical terms, this means some properties may receive higher voltage than normal while others experience weaker power supply, potentially affecting appliances and electrical systems.
Mangena added that City Power technicians repaired the faulty transformer component on 12 March 2026, restoring the integrity of the neutral connection and stabilising electricity supply to the affected streets.
“The necessary repairs have since been completed, and the power supply in the affected area has stabilised. Voltage levels are now operating within normal parameters,” he said.
Residents are encouraged to report any further irregularities or electricity-related concerns through City Power’s customer service channels to ensure a swift response.
