This week, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers impounded tyres during an enforcement operation at the intersection of Golden Highway and Provincial Road in Lenasia South.
The authorites reiterated that goods belonging to individuals trading without the necessary permits will be confiscated as part of ongoing by-law enforcement efforts.
This operation has sparked mixed reactions from members of the public with some supporting stricter enforcement while others questioned the consistency of actions taken by authorities.
On X (formerly Twitter), Nkosinathi Chris Kama commented: “It shouldn’t be a campaign but enforcement,” suggesting that by-law compliance should be a continuous process rather than periodic crackdowns.
Another user, Lonn, said: “At least warn them ahead by saying come next week it’s on. Then whoever is there continuing you confiscate. I believe and hope that’s what you did.”
Meanwhile, Joseph Kholopha expressed skepticism on Facebook about the timing of the operation, saying: “Lol.this is so funny because it’s been years these JMPD saw these everyday doing nothing …. mzansi it’s just a episodes”.
JMPD has urged traders to ensure they are properly registered and compliant with municipal by-laws to avoid having their goods impounded in future operations.
